Blogging 101: Regaining Lost Motivation

Last week I found myself in a bit of a blogging rut. I'd done two overnight shifts at work the weekend before which had left me pretty drained, and I was finding it difficult to get back into my usual flow when it came to blogging. I tend to plan my blog posts a week in advance so I had all my posts planned out for the week but when it came to sitting down and writing them I felt really uninspired and generally not excited by what I was writing. It's frustrating when you feel like this because when I was planning the posts I was super excited about writing them, but I just had a bad week and found it difficult to get the words down. Luckily, I feel back to my normal self; excited and head over heels in love with blogging again. But, I've definitely been in blogging ruts for longer than a week and I'm sure some of you have too, so here is my advice for getting yourself re-motivated and inspired to blog.

-Do Something Different-

If your normal routine is no longer inspiring you, do something out the ordinary to break away from that cycle. It doesn't have to be anything massive (unless you want it to be), but simply going somewhere different at the weekend or trying a new recipe one evening for dinner can be a massive re-motivator; I find doing something new when I'm in a rut reignites my creativity and desire to write and share. This also goes for your actual blog content. I found myself getting bored of writing review after review last year, so throw some different in the mix to get excited about writing again and showing off these amazing new posts to your readers.

-Gather Inspiration-

If your inspiration pool is running dry, actively seek out some sources of inspiration to get new creative ideas and thoughts flowing. Pick up some magazines, browse Pinterest, read your favourite blogs; do anything you feel you can to trigger ideas and get yourself inspired and passionate again. Seeing these sources of creativity will naturally kickstart your though process and use your reactions to motivate you. For example, seeing a picture of a stunning travel destination on Pinterest might motivate you to write a post giving advice on travelling solo. Recognise your favourite sources of inspiration and then use them to your advantage when you're suffering from blogger's block.

-Power Through VS Take A Break-

I find this is something that varies to each individual and each situation. Sometimes I find forcing myself to carry on and write will re-spark my motivation, but other times I find just admitting I need a few day's break and taking some time to wind down and find my feet again is the best thing to do. You'll know in your heart what is best for you in any one situation where you feel unmotivated, but whatever you chose to do I think it's important to remember that things will go back to normal and you will regain your motivation again at some point. And if you don't? Don't worry about it. If you find you stop enjoying blogging altogether then don't force it; A hobby should be something you enjoy, not a burden. You're not letting anyone down but yourself if you waste your life doing something you don't enjoy.

-Get Up Early-

I definitely find starting early sets a good productive mood for the rest of the day. Having more than your eight hours can sometimes do more harm than good as your body and mind can feel sluggish as a result of oversleeping. Get up at a decent time, have breakfast, have a drink of water or a tea and get that first thing struck off your to do list before 12am. Start as you mean to go on, so begin the day productively and positively!

-Talk About It-

Let's not forget that there is a massively supportive blogger community who are here for you in your times of zero motivation! Tweet during a blogger chat about your situation and I'm definite you would get some advice and support from other bloggers who have been in your shoes at some point. Don't be afraid to tell people you're in a blogging rut because it happens to all of us! If you don't feel like tweeting about your lack of motivation chat to your friends, your parents or anyone you know will want to give you words of encouragement. Sometimes knowing that others are behind you and supporting you gives you the boost in confidence and motivation you were looking for.

  3. Morning! Some great tips here - thank you. I definitely think that next time I get in a rut I'll power on through. Mine hit a few months after starting the blog and I kinda lost momentum and took an impromptu break. Probably the worst thing I could of done as I barely blogged for a whole month!

  4. I feel like that sometimes and it's often when I actually have the time to write that I have no motivation! I find that talking to friends and family members helps and having a brain storm to see what kind of things float into your head! I try to write notes now for ideas to use when I have nothing to write about. Great post! :) xx
